When YA Creeps Into NA

It’s Monday people….

Okay, it doesn’t have to be that bad. It’s just another week. We’ll get through this. I promise.

Last week, I read an interesting article over on NA Alley. Click to read article. It was about those Young Adult Dystopian novels that come across as New Adult. You know the ones. They read with emotions that scream ‘this kid is not in high school anymore’. The topics are heavy hitting. The characters seem to be more mature than the normal young adult character. The stories say the characters are under eighteen, but he or she doesn’t feel like a typical teenager.

What books fall into this murky territory? Some of my favorites make the list.

The Delirium series by Lauren Oliver

The Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi

And, these titles are on my TBR:

Ally Condie’s Matched series

Goodreads.com Description: “Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate… until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.”

Goodreads.com Description: “The Society chooses everything. The books you read. The music you listen to. The person you love. Yet for Cassia the rules have changed. Ky has been taken and she will sacrifice everything to find him. And when Cassia discovers Ky has escaped to the wild frontiers beyond the Society there is hope. But on the edge of society nothing is as it seems… A rebellion is rising. And a tangled web of lies and double-crosses could destroy everything.”

Goodreads.com Description: “After leaving Society to desperately seek The Rising, and each other, Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again. Cassia is assigned undercover in Central city, Ky outside the borders, an airship pilot with Indie. Xander is a medic, with a secret. All too soon, everything shifts again.”

The takeaway? If you’re searching for a good new adult read, you might just browse through the young adult section. You never know what you might find.

What books, any YA genre, would you add to this list?

‘Til next time. Keep reading. Keep following.
